Technology
Self-sustainability and environmental protection are key words for the future of the pig iron industry worldwide. Charcoal steelmaking technology has become a reference for self-sustainable industrial production.
Proper planting and handling of eucalyptus tree forests for charcoal production has gained increased relevance in the pig iron industry. Planted forests carry a number of positive impacts, among which the conservation of patches of native forest and the replenishment of oxygen supplies. Carbon fixation provided by planted forests also provides for a positive environmental balance.
The pig iron mills held by Minas Metais use charcoal from eucalyptus forests planted on once degraded areas. Part of the charcoal used in our mills comes from trees removed as an outcome of the expansion of livestock farming areas, in a process that provides for proper economic destination to timber material. All the charcoal used in our industrial processes is licensed for use by government and environmental protection agencies.
Minas Metais offers guidance and awareness development programs to its affiliated companies on topics such as environmental protection and production process impact mitigation. We are constantly engaged in efforts to improve dedusting and waste management systems, and develop more efficient carbonization technologies.
